Research summary
This study will explore the experiences of women with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and health care professionals in relation to their experiences and views of pre-pregnancy care. Pre-pregnancy care is extremely important for women with established diabetes. It is known that high blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) at any stage during pregnancy is associated with poor outcomes both for the fetus and the mother. Several methods have been used in an attempt to improve uptake of pre-pregnancy care in women with T2DM, however, these have resulted in only marginal improvements in the uptake of this care.
In this study, individual in-depth interviews with women with T2DM will be conducted to gain a greater understanding of their experiences of planning for pregnancy and to identify ways in which they believe pre-pregnancy care could be enhanced. Health care professionals who currently participate with the delivery of pre-pregnancy care will also be interviewed. All of these interviews will be recorded and analysed and the findings shared with the participants in a series of workshops.
Women with T2DM will attend the first two workshops where the results of the interviews will be shared and ways of improving participation with pre-pregnancy care discussed. A workshop for healthcare professionals will be held where the analysis of the interviews and ways of delivering pre-pregnancy care will be discussed. In a process of co-design, the fourth and final workshop will bring together both the women with T2DM and the healthcare professionals to discuss the findings of the previous workshops and gain agreement on the content and method of delivery of the PREPARED programme; Pre-pregnancy care for women with T2DM.REC name
