Research summary
Performing an anaesthetic to patients outside of hospital requires a period of pre-oxygenation where the doctor provides high flow oxygen to the patient to minimise the potential for a decrease in oxygen levels (hypoxia) in the blood following administration of anaesthetic drugs (which stop normal breathing and increase the risk of hypoxia).
There are numerous strategies for administering this pre-oxygenation, but there is no consensus on which is the most efficient and comfortable way to do so. A recent study investigated three differing techniques in the pre-hospital environment, however there were several study limitations and additional techniques commonly used throughout the UK were not investigated.
This study proposes to investigate fully the range of techniques available to UK pre-hospital practice for pre-oxygenation and identify which are the most efficient and comfortable. The study will be undertaken on healthy adult volunteers and all interventions are non-invasive.
