  • Research summary

Chronic kidney disease is associated with lethargy, muscle wasting, reduced independence and quality of life. Previous work from our unit has shown that increased exercise, and improved education and support, can promote independence and help maintain overall health and well-being in these patients. Within this study, participants will be randomly allocated to receive either enhanced care, which includes a programme of exercise and education prior to starting dialysis, and increased exercise and education during the first six months of dialysis, or standard clinical care. We will measure specific measures of exercise tolerance, muscle function, nutritional intake, and assess patient perception of exercise tolerance and quality of life. By comparing the results from these assessments between the groups, we will be able to assess if enhanced care is superior to standard care in maintaining independence and quality of life in patients starting dialysis.
