Research summary
There is little evidence for patients in the rarer subgroups of lung cancer, for example, those with interstitial lung disease, those who undergo radiotherapy twice (re-irradiation) or those with the less common types of lung cancer. Often, these patients have co-existing health conditions that exclude them from conventional clinical trials.
The purpose of this study is solely to collect data; it will not alter or interfere with the standard treatment protocols. Patients will receive standard of care treatment throughout this study. The study will collect information from as many patients as possible treated at the Christie with radiotherapy for lung cancer in these patient groups. There will be no contact with patients and patients will not need to make any additional hospital visits.
Using data routinely collected during a patients’ treatment, we will create a database that we will use to help improve outcomes for these patients. We do not know of any other databases that exist collecting data on patients in these subgroups. Information will be stored in an encrypted database in a pseudo-anonymised format. Patients will be asked whether they agree that anonymised information collected during their treatment can be used for research using the Royal College of Radiology (RCR) radiotherapy consent form; they will not specifically be informed of this research study.
