Research summary
One of the main contributing factors to oral health is personal care of the mouth. In recent years toothbrushes have been developed to aid in the effectiveness of home brushing. More effective brushing will not affect other problematic behaviours, such as brushing for too short a time or too infrequently. A new smartphone app has been designed that can interact allowing personalised brushing routines to be set by professionals and provide individual feedback during brushing. This study aims to assess the efficacy of using this app to improve oral health along with brushing compliance and motivation. Two hundred adults with medium to high plaque coverage and medium to high inflammation of the gums will be enrolled from the Eastman Dental Hospital. Each patient will have two study visits, spread six weeks apart. The app will be set up at the first visit and used by the patient over the following six weeks. The health status of their gums will be assessed by a dental professional at both visits. They will also complete a short questionnaire at each visit assessing their own motivation to care for their mouth and an assessment of whether the app helps with this.
