Research summary
BACKGROUND:
NICE recommends the use of patient decision aids (PDAs) in consultations to support discussions between people and their health care professionals about their treatment options. Evidence on the use of PDAs to date suggests that use of these resources in addition to conversations with health care professionals can improve people’s knowledge of their treatment options. PDAs have also been found to reduce people’s concerns about their decisions that can arise from feeling uninformed or unprepared to make a decision.A team of clinicians from the Royal United Hospital, Bath (RUH) have developed a new PDA for people who have had a pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis and are recommended for short or long-term anticoagulation treatment (e.g. warfarin).
AIM:
The aim of this project is to evaluate the use of new PDA for use with people who have been diagnosed with pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis.METHOD:
A qualitative study, using semi-structured, one-to-one interviews either in person or over the phone will be conducted. Participants will include up to ten people who have had treatment at the RUH for pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis in the last year and up to ten health care professionals who are involved in prescribing and monitoring anticoagulation treatment for these conditions. During the interview the researcher and the interviewee will discuss the PDA, it’s comprehensibility, usability and feasibility for use in consultations. The data will be analysed using thematic analysis and will be used to form recommendations for the final version of the PDA. A treatment knowledge questionnaire will also be developed for use in future research evaluating the use of the PDA in consultations.
