Research summary
Currently, women are often provided with paper or links to electronic leaflets which are unread due to a lack of time, language barriers or poor health literacy. Women have indicated that they would like health messages to come from a trusted source and be simple to use. The use of digital animation can address problems with the need for communicating key health messages improving consistency of information and overcoming language and health literacy barriers. We have co-produced an animation to communicate key health messages about sepsis prevention to postnatal women and we now want to evaluate it. The information in the animation is spoken with subtitles and is currently in both Urdu and English. We aim to improve knowledge and awareness of health information relating to postnatal sepsis within a multi-ethnic population. We will do this by recruiting 40 postnatal women (English and Urdu speaking) on discharge from hospital. They will be asked to complete a short initial survey about their knowledge of sepsis, they will then be given the link to the animation, they will be able to revisit it at any time for 6 weeks postnatally. After 6 weeks, an audio recorded phone interview (with an interpreter if required) will include a short survey about their knowledge of sepsis and will explore their experiences of using the animation. We will evaluate the acceptability of the animation amongst the postnatal midwives through a combination of face to face interviews and a survey. From the survey, we will compare sepsis knowledge for women prior to discharge and 6 weeks following birth. Other data from the interviews will be subject to thematic analysis to assess women and midwives’ accessibility, acceptability.
