Research summary
Patients who have had surgery routinely have measurement of their blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels (pulse oximetry) and respiratory rate (breaths per minute) at regular intervals afterwards. Current practice internationally is for monitoring to be measurements taken every 4 to 6 hours.
Newer monitoring devices can continuously measure some of these variables and, in addition, provide additional measurements of the cardiovascular system. These newer devices are increasingly used in operating theatres and 'recovery rooms' where patients go immediately after surgery. There have been no reports of using these newer devices on wards.
We hypothesise that using a specific newer device, the LiDCO CNAP, we will be able to gain insights into best treatment of episodes of low blood pressure. This is a feasibility study to see if it's possible to use the device on a cohort of patients who've had surgery at Royal Surgery County Hospital.
The device is already in clinical use and has a CE mark. There is no randomisation and the only change in the patient's care is the additional use of this new monitoring device. The additional data that the device measures will not be available to the clinical team as this might alter management.
