Research summary
Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare type of pulmonary hypertension, where pulmonary emboli are not broken down in the correct way, leading to thickening of the pulmonary vasculature. This leads to high pressures in the pulmonary vasculature, which can lead to symptoms of breathlessness and fatigue, reducing quality of life, and can lead to death if untreated. Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) surgery is considered as a potential cure. This is a very specialist operation, with only one centre in the UK offering this treatment. These operations are up to 10 hours long, during which time a patient is drained of all their blood and their body cooled to half its normal temperature.
Given the intensity of the operation, the recovery from this operation is very important. Exercise training in patients with pulmonary hypertension is thought to improve exercise capacity and quality of life. Given this exercise is likely to be an important aspect in recovery from surgery. However, people ability to engage in exercise pre-operatively, may be limited. There is little published work looking at patients’ ideas of exercise, and how this may affect their opinion of being asked to exercise after their operation.
We are aiming to understand and clarify patient acceptability of engaging in exercise after their surgery and how this may change with their experience of exercise pre-operatively.
We will recruit participants following their operations at the only NHS Trust in the UK to provide the surgery (Royal Papworth Hospital). Following informed consent, an appropriate time will be arranged to complete a virtual interview with the participant.REC name
