Exploring Women’s Views About Post-Natal Nutritional Education Following a Diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). A Qualitative Study. \n\nThere is a strong relationship between GDM and the development of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM). Although deemed as a national priority, there is a dearth of information pertaining to strategies aimed at reducing the future risk of T2DM within the GDM population of Scotland. Within the health board of the principal investigator (PI) a key area of focus is the prevention of T2DM amongst such high risk population groups.\n\nIn response to the government directive, women diagnosed with GDM within the health board of the PI are offered an individual appointment with a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian (DSD) following a negative Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) 6 week’s post-delivery. A recent audit of this service revealed an uptake rate of 7.2 %, with only 13 individuals out of a confirmed 181 GDM cases attending in a 3 year period. \n\nAs the lead DSD for the health board, it is the responsibility of the PI to revise the current lifestyle intervention offered to this high risk group and base any resource constructed upon the needs of this population. To enhance the accessibility and trustworthiness of any future resource; the experiences, beliefs and perceptions of the use group must be ascertained.\n\nTo achieve this, the PI proposes to undertake a general qualitative descriptive study (duration 12 months), where participants who have previously failed to access postnatal lifestyle education following a diagnosis of GDM will be interviewed (duration not expected to exceed 90 minutes), following a semi structured format. Once transcripts are processed using framework analysis, the generated outcome measures will be prove fundamental to effective and engaging service redesign. \n
