Research summary
People living with HIV have a high burden of mental health, social and spiritual concerns, physical symptoms, and poorer health-related quality of life than the general population. People with HIV feel that routine clinical appointments do not generally address the things that matter to them, with implications for their engagement with and outcomes of care. We have established a stakeholder project team, conducted community consultation and undertaken careful research-led development of a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for people living with HIV (called “POSITIVE OUTCOMES”). POSITIVE OUTCOMES is a simple tool which can quickly identify what matters to people living with HIV, and so enable care that is centred on the individual.
Effective application of a PROM in HIV care services will improve care and services at both an individual patient level in real time, and at a service level by identifying specific needs of the population and developing services and referral networks to address these. This project will evaluate implementation of POSITIVE OUTCOMES into routine clinical care in five HIV clinics in the UK and US. The impact on outcomes will be tested in annual quality improvement cycles and people living with HIV and clinicians will have the opportunity to share their views on and experiences of using the PROM in interviews and focus groups.
Following implementation at the demonstration sites, freely available international manuals on implementation of the POSITIVE OUTCOMES quality improvement programme will be developed and disseminated.
