    Research Summary

This study will work with children, young people, parents and health professionals to co-design a toolkit to promote the use of positive behavioural strategies (PBS) and reasonable adjustments when a child with intellectual disabilities or autistic spectrum condition attends hospital for a clinical procedure. These children can find attending for such procedures incredibly difficult and anxiety provoking and this study aims, through the co-development of an accessible and child-centred toolkit, to reduce the difficulties experienced.

This is a multi-phased qualitative project using online interviews, accessible and child-centred activity sheets, journey maps and online workshops. All phases of the project will engage with children and young people with intellectual disabilities and autistic spectrum conditions, their parents and the health professionals who care for them. The design has been informed by consultation with children, young people and families and aims to be flexible to encourage and facilitate the involvement of children and young people with intellectual disabilities and autistic spectrum disorder.

    Summary of Results

The team have created a 'My Hospital Guide' designed with children, young people, parent, carers and health professionals and are currently seeking additional funding through alternative sources to complete a pilot evaluation of the resource.
We have applied for further funding to conduct an evaluation of the toll and implementation work to develop robust evidence to underpin the use of the 'My Hospital Guide'.
Dissemination will involve national networks of Children's hospitals, sharing with NHSE and publication.
