  • Research summary

Can co-creation of a bespoke antenatal sonic environment using mobile technology impact positively on the relationship that parents have with their unborn baby?\n\nThe purpose of this study is to maximize/optimise the relationship between mother, father and unborn baby by the creation of a mobile app, in collaboration with the parents and health care professionals, for use in the antenatal period. The App will enable the parents to jointly create individualised sound and music clips together during the antenatal period with the aim that this joint interaction will impact positively on the bonding processes with their unborn baby. \n Participants will be recruited from the ante-natal booking clinic within the primary care setting. The aim is to encourage/facilitate early communication between the parents and the unborn so that the journey to parenthood is a collective and positive one. Married couples expecting their first baby are the target population. They have been deliberately selected for this study to maximize sample identification and comparison. Parents must have good English and be able to read and converse fluently. \nPhase 1 of the study will involve engagement, through focus group sessions, with parents-to-be, health professionals and the multi-disciplinary team to establish attitudes and preferences in relation to the use of sound and music as a communication tool in the antenatal period, assure all safety precautions are in place and to explore their combined preferences in relation to the design features of the App. \nPhase 2 will focus on recruitment of participants and modification of the prototype to the users’ specifications, ensuring the App is individual to each couple.\nPhase 3 will involve evaluation of all of the data collected from first two phases and end point interviews with parents.\n\n
