Data collection arrangements
Routinely collected electronic patient data of adults who are treated by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, either as an outpatient, A&E attender, day case or inpatient, to include retrospective patients and prospective patients such as those in the served population at risk of admission or death. The data may have been collected for direct clinical care or may have been collected as part of a routine audit. Patient data from other healthcare providers may also be held. This may include clinical and process data originally collected by healthcare organisations such as GPs and South Central Ambulance Service in the process of providing care for these patients. The database may also include depersonalised patient data from other care providers serving different populations, provided for comparative studies.
Research programme
The database will allow the analysis of patient outcomes and, their unique characteristics at the time they received treatment to understand risks of adverse outcomes and to develop scoring systems that clinicians and health practitioners could use to identify patients prospectively for early intervention. A care and clinical outcomes research database is an essential resource for the development and testing of risk models and classification systems, modified as necessary for patient subgroups, which can then be introduced into clinical care to improve patient outcomes.
