Research summary
Preterm birth (PTB) is the term used to define babies born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. PTB is the biggest cause of newborn deaths and the second biggest cause of deaths in children under five. Many of the babies who survive face greater risks of significant health problems and disability throughout their lives. Despite numerous efforts, PTB rates continue to rise in most countries and 40% of the cases will have no identified cause.
A Cochrane review which summarises current evidence found that women who receive the care by the same individual midwife or team of midwives during pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period are 24% less likely to experience preterm birth. We will conduct a pilot trial to determine whether a model of continuity of midwifery care for women at risk of preterm birth is feasible, and improves experience and outcomes for women and their babies. We are also looking at feasibility, acceptability to providers and women, organisational impact and resource use.
