  • Data collection arrangements

All centres performing gullet and stomach cancer surgery in England will be invited to contribute to the POPIO database. Eligible participants will be identified by their clinical care team and will be requested to join the database.

Clinical data and health related quality of life data will be collected using a REDCap database system to support the online interface. All information will be stored securely with limited access. The information will be stored in such a way to minimise any identification of participants.

Participants will be required to complete electronic patient reported outcome measures (PROMS) to document their health related quality of life (HRQL) after diagnosis, after neoadjuvant treatment, at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months post surgery and then at 6 monthly intervals for up to 5 years. HRQL will be established through four validated questionnaires. Data collection centres will record participants clinical and disease data at appropriate time points.

All correspondence will be conducted via email or telephonically. Some personal identifiable information will be stored separately and securely on the database. Information collected for the database includes patient demographic information, co-morbidities, cancer specific information, cancer treatment given and surgical information. The database will be approved for 5 years.

  • Research programme

The database will be run by the Surgical Intervention Trials Unit, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, Oxford University. The rationale for creating this database is to establish a high quality research database to facilitate future research on patients with potentially curable gullet and stomach cancer. Eligible participants for the database are individuals aged 18 years or above who are undergoing treatment for gullet or stomach cancer (chemotherapy/ radiotherapy/ immunotherapy/ surgery)and have access to email and a mobile phone. The POPIO database will collect data that can be used in a variety of health research, especially where HRQL is the measurable end outcome. The database will offer cancer patients’ insight into what to expect during treatment, as well as providing treating clinicians with a more granular dataset that may influence decision making. The novelty of this database is the collection of self-reported quality of life information alongside disease and treatment data. Multiple further studies can be embedded into this database as research priorities are identified. The data obtained from the database will be used to publish reports/ articles around patient reported HRQL outcome trends as well as clinical outcomes in this patient cohort.
