Research summary
FODMAPs are classified as a group of poorly-digested carbohydrates found in certain cereals, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products that do not get absorbed in the small intestine. They are passed from the gut to the large intestine where they are fermented. Such foods have been shown to cause symptoms in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients such as wind, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. People who do suffer with IBS rarely get these symptoms.
We want to study the amount of FODMAPs in the diet as well as any food intolerance people believe they suffer from. IBS patients will be compared with healthy volunteers. In this study we will collect information using 5 different questionnaires. We will also collect information about what our volunteers eat/drink using a 7-day food diary. The whole study is expected to last approximately 2 -3 weeks per participant and is expected to run for 1 1/2 years.
