Research summary
Lactate is produced in human body mainly in muscles. It gets rapidly cleared by the body under normal conditions. It can be elevated in conditions like, sepsis, shock, trauma etc. It has been shown that early measurement of lactate can aid in the diagnosis and management of sepsis which when undiagnosed can be life-threatening.
The aim of the Study is to assess the usefulness of point of care lactate measurements for above purposes. All adult patients who attend A&E with suspected sepsis, shock, trauma etc., as per standard care process will have a blood gas sample taken. The discarded blood gas sample would be used to measure lactate.
We also intend to use the whole blood samples which have been discarded after blood gas analysis from women on the labour ward and whole blood fetal scalp sample with suspected sepsis.
