Research summary
Podspectrix Ltd is developing an innovative, non-contact, non-ionising imaging device designed to help clinicians detect diabetic foot ulcers earlier, potentially preventing their progression. This feasibility study aims to assess whether a first prototype of the device can accurately measure key biomarkers associated with diabetic foot complications. Additionally, the study will collect image data to support the development of image analysis software.
Diabetic foot ulcers are a significant public health issue, causing approximately 9,000 amputations each year in the UK. By enabling earlier detection of complications, this device could help clinicians implement preventative measures, ultimately reducing ulcer development and the number of amputations.
Participants in this study will complete a short questionnaire, undergo a routine foot examination and have images taken of their feet using the new imaging device. Since the device is non-contact and does not use ionising radiation, it poses no safety risks. The collected images will be analysed later; neither participants nor clinicians will receive any clinical extrapolation based on data collected by the imaging technology. An official foot check report will be given to the volunteer. Participation will take under 1 hour, and participants will receive up to £25 for their time and travel costs.
Eligible participants must be aged 18 or over, have a confirmed diagnosis of diabetes, self-refer for the study, and have the capacity to provide informed consent.
