Research summary
This pilot study aims to assess opportunities to measure the long-term characteristics of post-operative dental discomfort and sensitivity (PODDS). The primary aim is to test the feasibility of a protocol that enables researchers the opportunity to track patients’ PODDS over long periods of time.
Because dental treatment can leave patients with teeth that are sensitive to all sorts of stimuli, including cold and heat, sweet foods and even dental floss there is considerable interest in developing treatment that mitigate PODDS, such as special toothpastes. However, no study has to date considered the long-term effect of these treatment on PODDS. One reason is that it is quite hard to follow patients over time and repeatedly ask them how sensitive their teeth are.
Our overall goal is to develop a robust method that can survey a large number of dental patients to find out how their teeth feel at various times of the day, one that can be used in future studies to compare various treatments for PODDS. Once we have considered the feasibility and feel we have a viable method we will then set about looking at how different treatments for PODDS work in the long term and therefore help develop better treatments for patients.
