  Pneumonia is a common respiratory disease that affects thousands of people each year and in severe cases can lead to death. Patients who survive pneumonia often are unprepared for how long recovery can take and often rely on primary care and repeat antibiotics during their recovery. There are also significant readmissions after discharge. We aim to develop and test low-cost, scalable interventions to support those recovering from pneumonia after they have been discharged from hospital, to prevent further readmission, reliance on primary care and overuse of antibiotics. We aim to issue patients with an information leaflet, to see if this broadens their understanding of recovery from pneumonia when they have been discharged from hospital.
  Patients aged 18-85 will be eligible to take part in the study, they will need to have a clinically confirmed diagnosis of community acquired pneumonia during admission to be accepted into the study.
  The study will involve up to two semi-structured interviews lasting up to 45 minutes each. The first interview will take place at 2-4 weeks post-discharge and the second interview, which is optional, will take place at 12-16 weeks post-discharge. The study will last up to 18 months. The first interview will involve questions relating to the patient's experience of recovering from pneumonia and if they have found the leaflet helpful since being discharged home. The second interview, should they choose to participate, will involve further questions about recovery but will also explore patients opinions about how we design a further pilot feasibility study using both the leaflet and a nurse-led helpline service.
