  • Research summary

The purpose of the study is to understand how nurses can help prevent pneumonia in people aged over 65 living in supported living, care or nursing home settings. We know that for people aged over 65 in these settings there is an increased risk of developing pneumonia. This study seeks to understand those risks by looking factors such as vaccinations, carriage of bacteria, diagnosis and treatment of any pneumonia or suspected pneumonia. We hope that this will provide an evidence base for nurses in helping the prevention of pneumonia in these settings and reducing the reliance of anti-biotics which are becoming more resistant to certain bacteria.

We are aiming to recruit 200-400 participants who are aged 65 or over and live in supported living or a care or nursing home setting.

Participants who want to take part will be asked to sign a consent form. A process of consultee will be followed for those people who are deemed not to have the mental capacity to consent to research.

A baseline questionnaire will be completed exploring the participant's vaccination history, relevant medical history and anti-biotic use. With consent, this will be supplemented with GP/primary care data records.

The participant/consultee will also have the option of providing consent for sample collection these are nasal swab, oropharyngeal swab, nasophryngeal swab and a blood sample. The participant/ consultee can choose to provide all, none or some of the samples.

The study includes a 12 month follow up for each participant. Follow up will only be completed for participants who are seen by a doctor or nurse for a suspected chest infection. For these participants a further questionnaire will be completed and with consent supplemented with GP/Primary care records. The participant/consultee will also have the option to provide further samples as detailed above.
