  • Research summary

Play specialists provide therapeutic play for children undergoing procedures. They use a combination of strategies including preparation for the procedure, support during the procedure and post-procedure debrief. We have developed a semi-structured play therapy intervention which is developed from recognised techniques and personal experience. This study aims to deliver this semi-structured play therapy intervention and examine its impact on procedure-related anxiety, coping, pain and patient experience.\n\nChildren aged 5 - 17 years of age under the rheumatology service and expected to require at least two blood tests as part of routine clinical care during a 16 week period will be eligible to take part. \n\nChildren will be randomised to receive either the play therapy intervention with their blood tests or to receive standard care. All children will complete questions to answer how anxious the blood test makes them, how well they feel able to cope with the blood test and how painful they found the blood test. Patients will also be asked to observe how anxious they think their child is during the blood tests. At the end of the study period the patient and their parent found the overall experience of having regular blood tests.
