Research summary
PLATOON - Premature Loss of bAby Teeth and its impact On Orthodontic Need
Children with decay in their baby teeth often need one or more teeth removed (extracted) by a dentist. When baby teeth are extracted the remaining teeth may move, leaving less room for the growing adult teeth. If this happens the adult teeth can become crowded and braces may be needed to straighten them.
We want to find out how much space is lost when baby teeth are extracted and if these children are more likely to need brace treatment. One thousand children aged 6-11 years old will be studied. All are part of the ‘Born in Bradford’ cohort study. Half of the children will have had baby teeth extracted as part of their normal dental care. The other half will not have had teeth extracted.
Each child will have a dental examination, dental moulds and photographs of their teeth and face. Brace dentists (orthodontists) will look at this information and judge if each child is likely to need brace treatment either now or in future. The research team plan to follow up these children as teenagers and explore the accuracy of the judgements and the cost implications. The research findings will help inform the design of dental services for children.
