Research summary
Measuring ammonia in blood is an important part of the medical treatment and monitoring of children with certain inherited metabolic conditions, or patients who are very sick and have low levels of consciousness. The accuracy of the test can be affected by variety of factors that are not related to illness such as delay in getting the sample to the laboratory or when the red blood cells in the sample break apart outside the body. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the effects of these sorts of blood sample quality issues on the level of ammonia we measure in the blood.
