Research summary
Patients are increasingly treated for Achilles tendon ruptures using walking boots. However, there is no data about patients’ plantar foot pressures or the forces experienced under the foot, after treatment for Achilles tendon ruptures using these boots. This study therefore seeks to measure the pressures under patients’ feet during normal stance and when walking at a self-selected speed. Once patients have completed treatment in their walking boot, they will be asked to stand on a special pressure sensing mat in the orthopaedic outpatient department and then to walk over the mat a number of times. The mat detects the amount and distribution of force and pressure under the patients’ feet. The pressure readings will be compared to those taken from 25 healthy volunteers. The patients being treated for achilles tendon rupture will also have their ankles examined and be asked to complete functional scoring questionnaires. This assessment will be undertaken at removal of boot, 3, 6 and 9 months after the injury.
