  • Research summary

This study will explore the experiences of stroke patients and their carers involved in the PISCES phase 1 trial of neural stem cell treatment (NSCT). Stroke is the third most common cause of long-term adult disability in developed countries (W.H.O., 2004): over 50% of stroke survivors are left with a residual disability, and that there is a need for novel therapeutic approaches. The PISCES trial was a "first in man" safety study of the human neural stem cell line CTX0E03, implanted neurosurgically, in disabled stroke survivors who were between 6 months and 5 years after stroke. This unique cohort is now between 1 and 4 years after being enrolled in the study.

The study seeks to enhance knowledge of adult disabled stroke patients and their partners/carers key experiences after receiving NSTC by asking patients and their carers about their thoughts, views, feelings and experiences of receiving the treatment.

Qualitative research is able to capture the patient/client perspective of healthcare, and to enable professionals and providers to understand patient/clients experiences and perceptions of health services, treatment and provisions (Bryman, 2001). The results of this study will inform health professionals working with patients receiving NSCT, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in relation to disabled stroke patients, and their partners/carers. These views will be especially important in shaping the design of future clinical trials.
