  • Research summary

A Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a hospital ward for children and young people who need special care. Most children are on the ward as they have become very unwell, or because they have had a very bad accident. Sadly, children are at higher risk of death in PICU than on other children’s wards, but the special care they receive means that most children live, and are able to go home. Research shows us that seeing, or being part of very stressful, frightening or distressing events, like PICU, can have an effect on the way people think, behave and feel. Some people develop post-traumatic stress disorder which can have a big impact on their lives. Research also shows that children’s carers can find PICU a difficult place to be as well, and it can have similar impacts on them. This study is looking at the impact of being in PICU on the way children and their carers think, feel and behave. It also looks at whether the way carers think during the time their child is in intensive care has an impact on how they think, feel and behave after they have gone home. The last thing the study looks at is if carer’s ways of thinking has an impact on children’s ways of thinking, and the other way around. It is hoped that this study will help us to know how best to support children and their carer’s in the future.
