  • Research summary

Pin site infections are extremely common and occur in 60-90% of patients with circular frames. They are an important cause of morbidity for patients. So far, treatment has been aimed at relieving skin tension around pins, treating infection with antibiotics and leaving crusts around pin sites undisturbed. We propose a new technique for preventing infection based on our observations that “healthy skin” has fewer pin site problems. Our study is a prospective randomised clinical trial comparing 2 groups - (A) weekly pinsite care using chlorhexidine and (B) weekly skincare with an emollient. We have chosen an emollient that has both antibacterial and moisturising properties.
