Research summary
Music interventions have the potential to improve quality of life significantly for individuals living with dementia, and their families. However, scientific evidence to support the use of a specific intervention within the health service is currently lacking. This study will pilot the procedures for a full trial of an interactive music programme for individuals living with dementia on hospital wards or care homes, which has recently been developed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh. The pilot study will be conducted over 6 months in 2016 with patients from one ward in Edinburgh, UK with a diagnosis of moderate to severe dementia. Participants will take part in a series of 8 observed music workshops involving either live or recorded music; their direct care team will provide assessments of levels of key behaviours. In-depth interviews will be carried out with carers, health staff and intervention staff (musicians & workshop leader) to assess their views. The study aims to establish how many participants would be needed in a full trial for the results to be useful, what proportion of eligible patients are likely to take part, and how acceptable and practical research procedures and the music intervention would be from the point of view of those involved.
