Research summary
We want to find out if it is possible to use an accurate way of measuring how well a very ill child’s kidneys are working. We will only study children admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) who already have, or who we think are very likely to have, kidney damage. We will also only study children who have a tube in the bladder and who have drips for taking blood as part of their normal care. The study will require two extra blood tests and will last 48 hours. This study will help us to decide if kidney function can be accurately and reliably measured in sick children recently admitted to PICU using blood and urine collection. The serial measurement of kidney function allows detection of deterioration in kidney function, helping alert doctors to the possibility that the child has, or is developing, kidney damage and providing the opportunity to ensure treatment changes can be made to help the kidneys.
