Research summary
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a disease of the large bowel causing inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine (also called colon). There is no cure and patient's may have symptoms for life, however the correct treatments can reduce the inflammation and symptoms. Monitoring of UC is generally undertaken using a camera inserted into the rectum (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy) to allow visualisation of the bowel wall and assess the degree of tissue damage. With recruiting 20 patients in 15months though the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre at the University of Nottingham, the aim of study is to determine the feasibility of an MRI protocol to visualise and assess both inflammation and motility of the bowel wall in Ulcerative Colitis.
