Research summary
This is a pilot study to assess whether eBikes (battery assisted bicycles) are suited to use around the time of surgery. We plan to loan individual eBikes to patients undergoing planned bowel surgery. We plan to interview and survey participants/staff.
After bowel surgery many patients feel less physically fit and recovery can take time. Physical and mental preparation for bowel surgery is called “Prehabilitation”. This can decrease the risk of complications and improve recovery. Exercise is important for general health too, but we know that many people struggle to complete the 150 minutes of exercise per week that is generally recommended by the NHS.
Static cycling, walking and circuit training before surgery have been studied previously, but may not be suited to all people.
eBikes can be easier to use, are a sustainable form of transport and may be better suited to some of these people.
