  • Research summary

"Baby Buddy” is an electronically-delivered health intervention that supports and guides women through their transition to parenthood. It is available as a free smart phone “app”, available on iOS and Android phones, which provides tailored information and interactive, health-promoting features to expectant and new mothers. The aims are to improve maternal and child outcomes by increasing users’ knowledge and confidence about pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. It was developed by Best Beginnings with an expert stakeholder group including representatives from the Royal Colleges of Midwives, Nursing , Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics and Child Health.

This pilot evaluation being conducted at GSTT and Blackpool is assessing the feasibility of disseminating information about the app, and the acceptability of the app for different groups (service users and staff) as an additional source of health promotion information in the perinatal period. We aim to collect data on perspectives of the app, through interviews and surveys, and so it seems to fit within a questionnaire/interview study with these aims and methods.

The resulting evidence will inform further service developments related to the implementation and effective use of Baby Buddy and other electronic health promotion interventions in perinatal settings across the UK.
