  • Research summary

The study aims to evaluate the presence of disease around the roots of the tooth on dental CT scans taken for other reasons.

An analysis of available dental CT scans will be conducted. Each scan will be analyzed and all present findings of disease around the roots of the teeth will be recorded. Data recorded includes the reason of conducting the scan, which is an important factor in this study as we need to confirm the findings were unknown previously unknown. In order to know the reason for referral for the CBCT scan, we need to check each patient record in the NHS electronic patient management system (TRACK). Additionally, for all scans, age, gender, total number of teeth, root-filled teeth in the scan, the quality of root filling, tooth status (dacay, filling, or crown), and presence of disease around the roots of the tooth will be recorded. The study will be conducted from March 2025 to July 2025, and will involve all dental CT scans from NHS Lothian data at Edinburgh dental institute (EDI) for six-month period, January 2024 to June 2024. No scans will be conducted for this study, all scan would be available in the system previously.
