  • Research summary

This is a study of the feasibility of using a piezoelectric saw to remove bone from the outer ear canal of Surfers. The saw is used for other, more complex, ear surgery already but whether it is suited to this new surgery or not is not known.

Currently, surgical drills are used for the surgery but they are associated with a lot of unwanted skin loss during surgery and this prolongs healing time.

The Piezoelectric saw is much less damaging to skin and the trial seeks to explore the effect on healing times and how patients tolerate bilateral surgery done at the same sitting.

It is a prospective trial and will involve 20 volunteers.
