  • Research summary

This study is part of a full-time, funded PhD at Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln. It is an exploration of the experiences of parents who approach their health visitors with concerns about their child’s picky eating. It is important because picky eating is a very common problem, causing stress to both parents and children. Although we know a little about factors which contribute to picky eating, research indicates that more work needs to be done in this field in order to better support picky eaters and their parents.

This study will help us learn more about parents’ thoughts and feelings about their child’s eating behaviours and how they respond to them. There is a particular focus on parents’ own interpretations of how they parent in relation to food.

The study will involve twenty two participants. Each participant will take part in an individual interview with the researcher, taking place on Bishop Grosseteste University campus (Lincs only) or a Children's Centre (Notts only). Each interview will last approximately 60 - 90 minutes.

Participants will be recruited by Health Visitors across Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. Parents will be eligible for this study if their child is aged between 24 months and compulsory school age, and they have sought help from their Health Visitor because of their child’s picky eating. Parents of children who are referred back to the GP by their Health Visitor, or have a current diagnosis which affects their eating, are not eligible.
