Research summary
Music-supported therapy, which involves playing a musical instrument as part of therapeutic treatment, has been demonstrated to improve upper limb function in people with neurological disorders. However, little is known about children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP), a condition that affects the control of arms and impacts independence in life.
Following previous preliminary work, we designed a piano-based occupational therapy programme for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (aged 5-15) that aims to improve their hand function and quality of life. The present study will examine the feasibility of this piano programme and inform a multi-centre study we are planning to conduct in the future.
Participants will attend seven piano lessons where they will learn how to play three songs. Their hand function and quality of life will be assessed before and after the piano programme. After the end of all sessions, participants and their parents or carers will join an interview or a focus group to share their recent experience and identify any impact of the piano programme on their daily life and independence.
We will also form a Patient & Public Involvement (PPI) group with three parents/carers whose children took part in our preliminary work. These parents will be contacted via email on a regular basis to provide their feedback and opinion about different aspects of the project.
