  • Research summary

Prehabilitation is a relatively new concept and while there is evidence to show the benefits in other surgical specialities; such as reduced length of stay and disability, improved functional capacity and quality of life as well as fewer peri and postoperative complications (Mina et al 2014; Carli et al 2010); to date there is limited evidence to support its use within Cardiothoracic surgery. We plan to carry out a pilot study followed by a RCT to determine the effects of a physiotherapy prehabilitation programme (walking and deep breathing exercises) for Cardiothoracic patients by measuring changes in lung volumes, walking distance and physiotherapy length of stay postoperatively.
