Research summary
With advancements in video cameras (high definition images) and computer software technology we wish to assess if a new video analysis technique (Eulerian Video Magnification) can detect subtle changes in images of a subject enabling previously non-visible physiological changes to be identified and measured.
To date, this video analysis technique has been demonstrated in a small number of engineering scenarios in the laboratory and in this study we wish to see if it can be successfully applied in clinical practice and if the results obtained are directly comparable to measurements we routinely capture in the clinic; such as heart rate monitoring.
Although the technology exists, it remains in the very early stages of assessment as to its use in a clinical setting. Our hope is that through developing such technology we may be able to indirectly monitor patients with various conditions more in the comfort of their own home in the future through the use of smartphones, IPads and computer tablets.
We wish to study patients undergoing the cardioversion procedure as the functioning of their heart is likely to be different before and after the procedure (atrial fibrilation to sinus rhythm) and it will be interesting to study if the video based technology being used in this study can detect these subtle changes to the same accuracy as the usual ‘gold-standard’ methods we use to monitor these parameters (i.e. electrocardiogram, heart rate).
