  • Research summary

This study aims to investigate the impact and perceptions of the role of Physician Associates (PAs, formerly known as physician assistants) working in UK emergency departments (ED). This is because increasing numbers of hospitals are employing PAs in the UK, and it would be helpful to quantify their contribution to the organisation and delivery of emergency care. A series of case studies will take place in one English ED who currently employ 13 PAs. These case studies will include
    (a) Staff (ED Doctors) online survey looking at the opinions of PA skills and contributions to the ED
    (b) Patient post consultation questionnaire looking at their perception or opinions of their experience of consultations with PAs. This will also be assessed via retrospective review of responses on the Friends and Family Test (FFT).
    (c) PA perception of their own role within the ED via means of a virtual video interview
    (d) Consultant’s perception of the role of the PA within the ED via means of a virtual video interview
    (e) PA impact in the ED via means of retrospective chart review
