  • Research summary

Acquired brain injury (ABI) in childhood can affect how children move, think, communicate, learn and behave. Studies have shown that children with ABI participate in far fewer leisure activities than their age matched peers. It is thought that this is due to both factors related to the child (e.g. how they are able to move, or their motivation) and the environment around them (e.g. whether they can physically access the room to do the activity or whether they have people to support them). Given that it is known that participating in physical leisure activities is important to a child’s physical and emotional well-being, as well as their development, it is essential that the reasons why children do, or do not participate in physical based leisure activities are understood. This will increase professionals understanding, and help them to develop resources to support access to physical based leisure activities after ABI. Children and young people with ABI, and their families feel that this is a valuable topic to study, as returning to these physical based activities is important to them.

This study will consist of an electronic questionnaire that has been designed with young people with ABI and their parents. It will be completed by children/young people with ABI if possible, or by their parents if they are unable. The questionnaire will consist of demographic questions, followed by questions exploring decision making regarding participation in physical based leisure activities. It will be sent to parents of all children who accessed residential or community rehabilitation at The Children’s Trust following ABI. Children will be included if they left hospital/residential rehabilitation following their ABI 1-3 years ago, and were aged two or over at the time of their ABI. The questionnaire should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
