Research summary
Many studies have shown clear physical and mental health benefits in improving physical activity levels in individuals with chronic kidney disease. However, tools to assess physical activity reliably and consistently in everyday clinical practice are lacking. Direct measurement of physical activity using accelerometer devices is not practical and feasible as part of routine clinical practice. Self-report physical activity questionnaires are a useful alternative. Most of the readily available activity questionnaires have been developed with young fit patients, and are not suitable for patients with kidney disease who tend to have low levels of physical activity.
We aim to develop and validate a PA questionnaire in patients with chronic kidney disease. Study participants will comprise patients with pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease, those on haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplant patients. A novel questionnaire has been designed with data collected from previous studies on physical activity in patients with kidney disease. In phase 1 of the study, semi-structured interviews will be conducted to further refine the items for the draft novel questionnaire. Phase 2 of the study will involve validation of the refined questionnaire against measured activity using an accelerometer. The validated questionnaire will then be administered to a cohort of chronic kidney disease patients in phase 3 of the study to examine the various properties of the different items in the questionnaire in relation to the questionnaire as a whole.
