Research summary
The purpose of this study is to understand the physical activity levels in the abdominal aortic aneurysm screening population. It also aims to understands that populations perceived benefits of and barriers to physical activity and assess the acceptability of a behavioural change intervention in the aortic aneurysm screening setting. This study is important because, although the health benefits of physical activity are well documented, physical activity levels tend to decline with ageing. Low levels of physical activity in the elderly population can exacerbate the effects of chronic, non-communicable diseases to which they are prone and this results in a large burden on the health-care system.
Therefore, behavioural change interventions aiming to increase physical activity levels targeted at the elderly population would improve heath outcomes and could reduce the economic burden on the heal-care system.
This population has been selected as aortic aneurysm screening is offered to men, over the age of 65. They therefore serve as a sample of the elderly population. Screening clinics also coincide with national retirement age; retirement is a period of an individual’s life where natural context changes occur and habit formation and consequent behavior change are more likely to occur. A behavioural change intervention promoting physical activity at a screening clinic may therefore be maximally effective.
The study will be conducted at abdominal aortic aneurysm screening centres in North West London. Patients attending abdominal aortic aneurysm screening sites would be eligible to participate in this research. The study will last 6 months and will involve the participants completing a 15-minute questionnaire.REC name
