  • Research summary

Physical activity (PA) is recommended as part of routine Cystic Fibrosis (CF) care (Cystic Fibrosis Trust, 2017). Despite this there are few examples of interventions designed to promote PA in this population. It has previously been proposed that increasing levels of habitual PA may be more feasible and result in greater compliance than conventional exercise training inventions (Cox et al., 2013). To date, there is limited research exploring perceptions of PA among adults with CF. Involving patients and their families in a formative process is central to a phased approach to complex intervention design, which could ultimately increase PA (Smedley & Syme, 2001).

The aim of the research is to develop an intervention to promote PA among adults with CF. In doing so a participatory formative approach will be employed, involving patients with CF, their families and clinicians throughout all aspects of process.

All patients completing an on-going study (n =31) will be provided with an end of study report and be invited to participate in the current study, during the same routine clinic appointment at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH). Additionally, members of the CF multi-disciplinary team (MDT) at LHCH will be recruited to take part in phase 2 of the study (n=3-8).

    Phase 1
Individualised semi-structured interviews will be conducted to explore patients’ perceptions of PA. This will be facilitated via telephone and will require approximately 1 hour.

    Phase 2
Findings from phase 1 will inform the structure of phase 2, which will include focus groups including both patients and their families (where applicable) or clinicians. The first will include follow-up patient interviews, the second will include members of the CF MDT. The purpose of each focus group is to discuss how findings from phase 1 can inform the development and delivery of a PA intervention. The meetings will take place in the patients’ home or in a quiet private space at LHCH or LJMU, participation will require approximately 1 hour.
