Research summary
The number of children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has increased over the last two decades and patients with CKD have a highly increased risk of developing debilitating diseases such as diabetes. Promotion of an active lifestyle (e.g. more walking) is recommended for patients with CKD. However, currently the promotion of physical activity in regular care of young people with CKD is limited. To date, little evidence exists on how active children and teenagers with CKD are and what prevents and/or encourages them to be active. Therefore, this project aims to provide evidence on SB and PA patterns in children and teenagers with CKD. Additionally, this project will investigate if children and teenagers with CKD perceive specific barriers and facilitators to their involvement in PA and SB and how adding support for PA and SB to the regular care is viewed by patients and parents. The results of this will inform future development of active lifestyle interventions in children and teenagers with CKD. This study will lead to new knowledge for improving health and care of those with CKD.
