  • Research summary

The benefits of an active lifestyle are well known for the general population, and there is increasing evidence that the same is true for young people with Cerebral Palsy (CP). However, there is also evidence that young people with CP have lower levels of Physical Activity (PA) than their age matched peers. The proposed study aims to explore (i) current levels of PA of young people (11-18 years old) with CP(ii) their intentions towards increasing levels of habitual PA in the near future and (iii) the potential barriers and facilitators to engaging in PA.
Aims 1-3 will be investigated through a survey distributed to all young people aged 11-18 living in Edinburgh or the Lothians. Aims 2 and 3 will also be explored through focus groups with 15 young people and a focus groups with their parents or guardians.
The results from this study will help to decide whether future interventions addressing modifiable barriers and facilitators to PA participation are warranted and if so whether, and how, the content of such interventions may vary according to variables such as age, level of disability and PA beliefs.
