  • Research summary

Our previous research has shown that secondary school-aged CWE engage in less PA, than age-matched controls, with only 10% percent of the CWE meeting the WHO PA guidelines. However, the data collected was with secondary-school children and we have no data on primary school children which will be vital in understanding the trajectory of physical activity in children with epilepsy as well as optimising interventions with respect to age.

Our primary aim is to conduct a prospective observational study to compare levels of Physical Activity (PA, sedentary behaviour and sleep in primary school-aged children with and without epilepsy using accelerometers and survey methods.

Our secondary aim is to identify factors associated with levels of PA, sedentary behaviour and sleep in primary school aged Children with Epilepsy (CWE).

We will also explore CWE and parental views on barriers/facilitators for CWE engaging in PA.

The study will provide pilot data on levels of physical activity in children with epilepsy in the UK in comparison with age and gender-matched controls, plus data on possible factors associated with physical activity in this group (e.g. child behaviour and learning, parental wellbeing).

We will also gather data on child and parental views regarding barriers/facilitators to PA in CWE and on possible interventions to increase PA in this group. We can then use this data to inform potential interventions.
