Research summary
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) has evolved; it is now seen as repeated episodes of cessation of breathing due to upper airway closures during sleep (Akashiba et al., 2002). Currently, there is limited literature investigating physical activity (PA) in OSA patients who have undertaken continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment. This study hypothesises that PA and exercise capacity will improve after 3-months of CPAP in patients with OSA. Outcome measures of mean number of steps/day and distance covered using the PA monitor and 6MWT to be used. This study also hypothesises that self-reported levels of PA will be associated with objective measures of PA after 3-months of CPAP in patients with OSA. Previous literature has only reported general quality of life focusing questionnaires and not relating this to PA. This is a novel study due to it being the first to measure exercise capacity and physical activity at the same point in time.
