Research summary
Little is known about the level of activity in patients with malignant pleural effusion (fluid collection around the lung due to cancer) but it is generally regarded as being very low in a level comparative to or exceeding that seen in other cancers. It has been demonstrated that therapeutic pleural interventions like fluid aspiration, pleurodesis (adhering lung to chest wall to prevent fluid recurrence) and indwelling pleural catheters have variable positive effects on patients' breathlessness and quality of life. It is yet to be known whether these interventions contribute to improving activity levels in this subset of patients. This study aims at assessing activity levels in patients with malignant pleural effusion before and after therapeutic interventions. An improvement in activity level is an important parameter that is known to have positive impact on various health-related outcomes.
